Nutrients Depleted by the Pill

PSA: The OCP (Oral Contraceptive Pill) depletes some major nutrients including magnesium, B vitamins, folate/B12, vitamin C/E, zinc, selenium and CoQ10. These nutrients are needed for important body functions such as digestion, liver detoxification, skin and gut integrity, neurological function, energy, cognition, and mental health including mood, sleep and stress resilience.

Deficiencies in these nutrients can cause various conditions to develop such as anxiety, depression, insomnia, mood disorders, IBS, SIBO, poor concentration, fatigue, PMS, sluggish liver, acne, eczema, autoimmune flares… the list goes on. Luckily, there are specific nutritional dosing and therapeutics we can use to restore function to these systems.

Magnesium: Key Roles

  • Supports energy and neurotransmitter production which governs mood and neurological function

  • Important precursor to GABA; helps to reduce stress, anxiety and insomnia

  • Supports heart health and muscle recovery

  • Involved in liver detox

B Vitamins: Key Roles

  • Supports energy production and red blood cell synthesis

  • Folate and B12 levels drastically depleted by OCP. These are specifically needed for cognition, DNA synthesis and oxygenating the body

  • Needed for countless reactions in the body to make hormones and neurotransmitters

  • Involved in liver detox and macronutrients (carbs, fats and protein) breakdown

Antioxidants: Key Roles:

  • Vitamin C/E is crucial for immune function, detoxification, tissue repair, gut health, skin integrity, stress resilience and vascular health

  • Zinc is extremely diverse in it's functions and is needed for immunity, thyroid health, tissue repair, skin/gut health, HCL and digestive/liver enzyme production which governs the GIT. It is a co-factor for many enzymes, hormones and neurotransmitters which governs everything from sleep, mood, stress resilience, cognition/behaviour and liver detox.

  • Selenium is a potent antioxidant that protects against free radical damage and stimulates thyroid function.

Coenzyme Q10: Key Roles:

  • Vital nutrient for the energy cycle, required to sustain all body systems

  • Protective of heart and vascular health

  • Potent antioxidant that reduces free radical damage
